NOT YOUR AVERAGE FISH
Marine baitfish are the basis of the food chain for many of our wild fisheries and endangered species and support a multi-billion dollar commercial and recreational fishing industry in the U.S. There are over two dozen species of marine baitfish in the United States, supporting hundreds of commercial and recreational fisheries.
However, the saltwater baitfish market remains largely untapped by aquaculture; currently supplied and limited by wild catch, catch quotas, and seasonal availability. Therefore, the development of a marine baitfish aquaculture industry will not only be important for enhancing the economic value of our commercial and recreational fisheries, but will also spur economic growth and sustainability within Florida’s fisheries.
